      The article presents information on the changes brought by newly appointed chairman John R. Purcell at textbook publishing company SFN Cos. Inc. In April 1983, Purcell signed an agreement to buy ABC Industries Inc., a legal publisher, for 16.5 billion dollars. He says that SFN must diversify beyond the textbook business, and enter the medical publishing business. Purcell has a staff of 75 people who are writing computer software for classroom use.
