Imagined communities and mining communities.

The author reports on an autumn 1994 conference on "Community, Gender and Culture in Mining History," at the University of Leeds in England. He comments on Benedict Anderson's reflections on the nature of nationalism which suggested that nations are imagined communities. The author suggests a number themes or emphases which he think are important in new critical understandings of the nature of mining communities.
