The article discusses the value of the involvement of faculty members in higher education assessment in the U.S. The ability of a well-organized faculty to advocate for meaningful academic principles was said to be demonstrated by the experience of community college professors in California. The low national percentage of regional accreditation commissioners who are faculty members reportedly reduces the influence of the faculty on academic principles. The author recommends ways for faculty members to increase their involvement in accreditation. Also emphasized is the necessity for regional accreditors to encourage local faculty involvement.
