How would the tone of a grief stricken story be translated when it does not even directly express sorrow but only that of a deep sadness? This in brief is the difficulty encountered in an attempt to translate Claude McKaye's Crazy Mary from English to Filipino. In this translation, the concept that would be used is the communicative translation used by Hatim and Mason (1990 in Almario et. al. 1996) as anchor. Based on this concept, the three primary considerations observed in the required context of the translation are (1) the words or communicative expressions, (2) the images of grief and (3) the tone or theme of the narrative. It is also the objective of the translator to maintain the tone or intent of the author together with the control and delicated language of the author in the translated version.
