The article presents the first installment in a series of articles about vocal technique misconceptions. She discusses myths about breathing methods used during singing. No kinesthetic sensation is felt by the singer during diaphragm contraction or when air moves through the lungs. She notes that tone improves when singers understand that lungs fill down and out during inhalation. She asserts that exhalation is a passive process. Air pressure, carbon dioxide and abdominal muscles are also discussed.
