The Yaqui Indian Question During the Second Porfiriato (1890-1909): A Review of Official History.

The issue of the Yaqui people, namely the Cuestión Yaqui, is a controversial historical process, made polemic both by elevated levels of violence and by its ties to the economic and political interests of the upper echelons of the Porfiriato. This work intends to question the narratives of the official historians. While they showed indigenous savagery and the economic returns of plantation owners and merchants as central characteristics of the period, they underestimated the instrumental role played by the Yaquis and elite political and economic interests which ignored their territorial claims for autonomy. The second purpose of the article is to show that these issues left the Yaqui Indians in a very submissive position inside the regime while simultaneously reinforcing a negative image of them in the public eye. La Cuestión Yaqui es un proceso histórico controvertido por su elevada violencia y los compromisos e intereses económicos y políticos de las altas esferas del Porfiriato. El artículo cuestiona las narrativas de los historiadores oficiales de la época, aunque mostrará el salvajismo de los indígenas y los retornos económicos de los hacendados y comerciantes, como características centrales de la época, subestimaron la instrumentalización de los yaquis y los intereses políticos y económicos, del todo ajenos a las reivindicaciones territoriales y de autonomía de los indígenas. También muestra cómo la Cuestión Yaqui sometió a los indígenas al régimen y les otorgó una imagen negativa que se fue instaurando en los sentimientos nacionales.
