The article discusses the application of probability and statistics to biosecurity and biosurveillance in both retrospective and prospective manners in Australia. It looks into the relationship between bioterrorism and biosecurity and the contributing factors of the failure of traditional methods of monitoring and analysis. It examines the prevalence of equine influenza, a highly contagious disease affecting horses, donkeys, mules and zebras. It cites the potential risks of animal diseases such as avian influenza, bovine spongiform encephalopathy and foot-and-mouth disease. Moreover, it reveals the advantages of cellular automata methods which have been used to model for pathogen and disease transmission.
