The article discusses the implementation of ICD-10-CM, the mandated standard for diagnosis coding and ICD-10-PCS for hospital procedure coding. Both codes are set to be implemented on October 1, 2013 and it is suggested that healthcare information technology leaders should start to convert to the interim 5010 X 12 and 4010 X 12 standards which will then be migrated to the ICD-10 code sets. The procedures and requirements for the successful implementation of the two interrelated migrations are also explained.
