The Dispute on the Concept of Race in the Early Deutsche Gesellschaft für Soziologie As the Crucial Point of Its Methodological Constitution. (English)

When embodying the postulate of value-freedom in its constitutive statutes in 1910 the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Soziologie (DGS) aimed for its own methodological framework. The members failed, however, to reach an agreement about the explicit epistemological demands of value-freedom ('object', 'structure of scientific propositions'). Notably, the obvious contradiction between value-freedom and a generalising 'natural scientific' sociology or to be precise to a 'race sociology' -- turned out to become a matter of ongoing discussion that showed that the discursive rules of value-freedom were not agreed upon by all sides. Analysing the different 'contexts of justification' as well as particular scientific networks this contribution outlines the debates on the concept of 'race' within the DGS from the late Kaiserreich to the first years of Nationalsozialismus. Die Deutsche Gesellschaft für Soziologie (DGS) suchte in ihrer Gründungsphase mit der ‚Werturteilsfreiheit‛ eine eigenständige methodologische Rahmensetzung. Jedoch bestand über den damit verbundenen Anspruch bei der Gegenstandswahl und der Organisation wissenschaftlicher Aussagen ausgesprochener Dissens. Gerade der direkte Widerspruch zu einer naturwissenschaftlichen Soziologie bzw. einer ‚Rassensoziologie‛ sollte für die ‚Werturteilsfreiheit‛, verdeutlicht, immer wieder zu einem Kristallisationspunkt werden. Im Fokus dieser Problemstellung werden ausgewählte Begründungszusammenhänge und Wissenschaftlernetzwerke, in denen der Rassenbegriff in der DGS verhandelt wurde, vom späten Kaiserreich bis zum beginnenden Nationalsozialismus nachgezeichnet.
