The article presents a study which investigates the role of pH and ionic strength on the removal of naphthol and the features of naphthol polymerization products (NPPs) produced. The study used liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry to determine the structures of NPP. It also used completely mixed batch reactors (CMBRs) to evaluate the impact of pH and ionic strength on HRP-mediated transformation and 1-naphthol polymerization. It was found out that pH has an impact in polymerization of hydroxylated aromatic compounds by means of affecting its state of ionization or changing the catalytic properties of the enzyme. Increasing the dose of enzymes can overcome the said impact. Moreover, it was also found out that pH solution can influence the characteristics of NPPs.
