This article demonstrates that the redox-sensing deacetylase Sirtuin 1 selectively stimulates activity of the transcription factor hypoxia-inducible factor 2 alpha during hypoxia. The study takes pertinence from the fact that hypoxia changes cellular metabolism, activating redox-sensitive as well as oxygen-dependent signal transducers. Within cultured cells and mice, increases or decreases in Sirtuin 1 activity or levels affected expression of the target gene erythropoietin. Stress-responsive transcriptional regulators that coordinately increase production of protective factors allow organisms to survive in hostile environments.
