This article discusses a study on the authority given by the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 to audit committees in overseeing their companies' financial reporting processes in the U.S. The authors used an empirical approach to examine the audit committee practices of the Nasdaq 100 companies as of August 2002. They believe that it is important for audit committees to evaluate their own performance and report on whether they carried out the charter requirements.
