The article discusses the educational possibilities and legal drawbacks for colleges and students who use the computer game Second Life in which players adopt avatars and interact with one another. Can university officials be held accountable if their students join Second Life and something bad happens to them? The author notes that Linden Lab, the maker of Second Life, uses a service terms contract with a clause that precludes Linden Lab from being at fault for the behavior of game users. Professors may need to include a clause in their syllabi stating that student participation in Second Life is not obligatory and that the university is not liable for anything that happens there.
