The article focuses on information literacy (IL) assessment from the perspectives of the student or learner in the U.S. Assessing IL, often associated with the research process, includes skills of identifying the information task, developing a research strategy, and evaluating information resources, to name a few. It is noted that personal IL and instructional IL should be distinguished to examine the nature of IL. One major difficulty to IL assessment and intervention is the preconception that it is a library thing. Other barriers for the assessment from a learner perspective is discussed. A list of assessment instruments that can be used, including research processing models, communication skills, metacognition skills, and collaboration skills, is also presented.
