The article examines the ecological consequences of changing fertile agriculture land in to pasture in a poor country like Honduras. Many farmers believe that proper fertility has returned to the soil so that it can be planted again. The landowner has a new pasture and has saved several hundred dollars in labor costs when the subsistence crops are harvested. Local populations have to compete in Honduras with the animals for the locally available resources. Cattle production land has led to precipitous declines in both fallow land and the amount in forest.
