The article profiles Warren K. Lewis, a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Lewis is the first chairman of the institute's chemical engineering department and has been a member of the faculty for nearly four decades. He also has helped shape engineers who defined modern chemical engineering. In the late 1930s, Lewis, along with a colleague, has made a breakthrough in the manufacture of gasoline giving the Allies a steady supply of high-octane aviation fuel during World War II. He was most famous as a teacher within the MIT community.
