The article presents information on a study conducted in Italy, according to which antivirals should not be prescribed for seasonal flu. The study combined data from 50 trials on two classes of antiviral drugs, the M2 ion channel inhibitors, amantadine and rimantadine, and the newer neuraminidase inhibitors zanamivir and oseltamivir. The researchers said that amantadine and rimantadine should not be used for any kind of flu control because both are ineffective and can cause unpleasant side-effects, such as hallucinations. The researchers concluded the use of neuraminidase inhibitors should be saved for serious epidemic or pandemic flu.
