Covariates of Pediatric Nurses' Burnout: A Systematic Review.

Background: Because of the special nature of their patients, recent studies on burnout began to focus on pediatric rather than on general nurses. However, these studies mostly concentrated on selected covariates and lack comprehensiveness. Purpose: This paper aims to suggest a holistic theoretical model on burnout covariates among pediatric nurses. Methods: This review utilized a systematic search strategy in four databases and the PRISMA guidelines to retrieve and summarize studies investigating pediatric nurses' burnout. Results: Out of 78 retrieved articles, 21 relevant studies were included in our synthesis. Conclusion: The proposed model includes a wide range of burnout covariates. These covariates were categorized into contributing factors (e.g. COVID-19 pandemic, and poor work engagement) or consequences (e.g. poor well-being, and patient adverse events). Implications for Nursing: This model might be a comprehensive approach and guide for future studies addressing pediatric nurses' burnout.
