Local journalism in the Chicago area is facing challenges as traditional media outlets continue to decline. The rise of the internet and the collapse of the advertising model have led to the closure of many newspapers, leaving residents in more than half of U.S. counties with limited access to reliable local news sources. The loss of local news has had negative effects on civic participation and has opened the door to misinformation. Philanthropy has stepped in to support local news organizations, but finding a profitable business model remains elusive.
