This article explores the relationship between W.E.B. Du Bois and the American Association of University Professors (AAUP). Du Bois joined the AAUP in 1937 and was involved in the establishment of a new chapter at Atlanta University. He participated in meetings and discussions on faculty roles and standards, but tensions arose between Du Bois and the university's board of trustees, leading to his dismissal in 1944. Du Bois later resigned from the AAUP in protest of their practice of holding meetings in segregated hotels. The article suggests that Du Bois's vision of a cooperative university was incompatible with the AAUP's approach to university reform, and it raises questions about how faculty organizing can challenge the competitive structure of modern universities and embrace a cooperative agenda.
