Thinking Pain: On the Origin of Thought in Pain.

What is pain? How is it perceived and how is it processed? Where is it situated and how can it be specified within the framework of a theory of the psychic apparatus? These problems arose for Sigmund Freud ever since his »Project for a Scientific Psychology« in 1895, and throughout the development of his œuvre, he encountered them again and again and in the most diverse of contexts, without, however, ever being conclusively resolved. This article traces how the phenomenon of pain has repeatedly defied theory, forcing it to be questioned and revised. Thus, it becomes apparent that pain is not just one phenomenon among many, but the most fundamental and essential in the development of thinking and in the formation of the psychic apparatus: Since pain is that what brings about the most fundamental form of bodily representation, and since every other form of representation always remains bound to the body, then it is pain itself that constitutes the ultimate ground for thought, while at the same time also eluding it – as something »beyond« thought that unfailingly reminds us of the here and now of our body. Was ist Schmerz? Wie wird er wahrgenommen und verarbeitet? Wo ist sein Ort, und wie kann er im Rahmen einer Theorie des psychischen Apparats bestimmt werden? Diese Probleme stellen sich Sigmund Freud seit seinem Entwurf einer Psychologie von 1895, und über die Entwicklung seines Gesamtwerks wird er immer wieder und in den verschiedensten Zusammenhängen darauf stoßen, ohne sie jedoch einer abschließenden Lösung zuführen zu können. Der Beitrag verfolgt nach, wie sich das Phänomen des Schmerzes immer wieder quer zur Theorie stellt und zu Infragestellung und Revisionen zwingt. So zeigt sich, dass im Schmerz nicht ein Phänomen unter vielen, sondern das für die Ausbildung des Denkens und des psychischen Apparates ursprünglichste und wesentlichste zu sehen ist: Weil Schmerz die grundlegendste Form der Repräsentation unseres Körpers veranlasst und jede andere Repräsentation immer an den Körper gebunden bleibt, ist der Schmerz der sich dem Denken entziehende Urgrund des Denkens – ein ›Jenseits‹ des Denkens, das uns unverlierbar an das Diesseits unseres Körpers erinnert. Die Notwendigkeit, überhaupt zu denken, beginnt mit dem Schmerz. Und wenn wir Schmerz denken, denken wir unseren Körper.
