Startups are now selling genetically modified plants directly to consumers, allowing people to grow biotech plants in their own backyards. One example is the Purple Tomato, created by Norfolk Healthy Produce, which contains a gene from a snapdragon flower that adds a nutrient called anthocyanin and gives the tomatoes their striking purple color. Another example is the firefly petunia, sold by Light Bio, which is supposed to glow in the dark. These plants offer a unique and visually appealing addition to home gardens, and while they are not yet approved for sale in some countries, they represent a growing trend in consumer biotech.
