Systemism and International Relations: How a Graphic Method Can Enhance Communication.

This article brings a broad array of works, which pertain to different research areas of international relations (IR), into contact with each other via a graphic method, systemism, to obtain insights that otherwise might prove elusive. Completion of these tasks is anticipated to exemplify how the systemist approach can enhance communication throughout IR. Systemism is introduced as a graphic technique for communicating arguments. Systemist graphics are used to convey the contents of (a) two studies that focus on theory per se and (b) a range of topics—foreign policy analysis, forecasting, and conflict processes. Systematic synthesis focusing on the two works about theory and bricolagic bridging that is based on all five studies reveal the contributions of a systemist approach, respectively, to the logics of confirmation and discovery. Este artículo agrupa una amplia gama de trabajos, que pertenecen a diferentes áreas de investigación de las Relaciones Internacionales (RRII), a través de un método gráfico, el sistemismo, con el fin de obtener ideas que de otro modo podrían resultar difíciles de alcanzar. Adelantamos que la ejecución de estas tareas ejemplificará cómo el enfoque sistemista puede mejorar la comunicación en el campo de las RRII. El sistemismo se presenta como una técnica gráfica que sirve para comunicar argumentos. Los gráficos sistemistas se utilizan con el fin de transmitir el contenido de (a) dos estudios que se centran en la teoría per se y (b) temas variados: análisis de política exterior, predicción y procesos de conflicto. La síntesis sistemática centrada en los dos trabajos sobre teoría, así como el trabajo de acoplamiento de elaboración propia que se basa en los cinco estudios, revelan las contribuciones de un enfoque sistemista a, respectivamente, las lógicas de confirmación y descubrimiento. Cet article présente un vaste éventail de travaux relevant de divers champs d'étude en relations internationales et les articule entre eux au moyen d'une méthode graphique caractérisée par une approche systémique. Cette méthode permet de tirer des enseignements qui, dans d'autres contextes, n'auraient pu être déduits. La réalisation des tâches à effectuer est ici anticipée de manière à illustrer les apports d'une approche systémique pour la communication dans le domaine des relations internationales, appliquée dans le contexte de cet article à une technique graphique permettant d'avancer des arguments. Les visuels ainsi obtenus sont utilisés pour refléter le contenu de (a) deux études axées sur la théorie per se et (b) divers sujets (analyse de politiques étrangères, prévisions et caractéristiques des conflits). Des synthèses systémiques basées sur les deux études théoriques et le travail d'articulation d'éléments disparates, basé sur l'intégralité des cinq études, révèlent les contributions d'une approche systémique aux processus de confirmation et de découverte, respectivement.
