A LETTER FROM SULTAN AGUNG TO FELIPE IV: DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS BETWEEN MATARAM AND THE SPANISH MONARCHY. (English)

In South Asia, the Javanese kingdom of Mataram, the most important entity in Insulindia during the first half of the 17th century, did not hesitate to ask the Iberians for a military alliance against their common enemy, the Dutch East India Company (better known as VOC). For a decade (1630-1640) Sultan Agung maintained a regular diplomatic relationship with the Portuguese viceroys of the Estado da Índia. From its capital of Goa and from its Malay settlement of Malacca, Portugal developed an intense diplomatic relationship with central Java by sending a series of embassies to the capital of the Mataram kingdom located in present-day Yogyakarta. A letter from the sultan to Felipe IV, the gifts exchanged and the analysis of the evolution of the Ibero-Javanese negotiations help us to study the relationship between the Hispanic Monarchy and one of the most important sultanates in the history of Indonesia. En el sur de Asia, el reino javanés de Mataram, la entidad más importante de Insulindia durante la 1ª mitad del siglo XVII, no dudó en solicitar a los ibéricos una alianza militar contra su enemigo común de la Compañía Neerlandesa de las Indias Orientales (la más conocida como VOC). Durante una década (1630-1640) el sultán Agung mantuvo una regular relación diplomática con los virreyes portugueses del Estado da India. Desde su capital de Goa y desde su establecimiento malayo de Malaca, Portugal desarrolló una intensa relación diplomática con el centro de Java gracias al envío de una serie de embajadas a la capital del reino de Mataram situada en la actual Yogyakarta. Una carta del sultán a Felipe IV, los diversos regalos intercambiados y el análisis de la evolución de las negociaciones ibero-javanesas nos sirve para estudiar la relación entre la Monarquía Hispánica y uno de los sultanatos más importantes de la historia de Indonesia.
