The Role of Non-Governmental Organizations in Enhancing Food Security for Poor Families in Upper Egypt: A Field Study in Sohag Governorate.

This study deals with the role of non-governmental organizations in enhancing food security for some poor families in Upper Egypt, by applying the "Bab Amal" program, which is implemented by a number of national, regional and international non-governmental organizations. Hence, the study aims to reveal the role of these non-governmental organizations in promoting Food security for poor families in Sohag governorate. The methodology of the study was represented in the social survey method by the sample, which was selected using the systematic random sample method, through the lists of families benefiting from the program in Sohag Governorate, and data was collected through the interview tool, in addition to Food Insecurity Experience Scale (FIES), which developed by The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The study concluded that despite the fragility of the economic and social conditions of the beneficiary families, the “Bab Amal” program had an effective role in enhancing the levels of food security among a sample of the beneficiary families, by supporting livelihoods, enhancing families’ income, developing the family’s knowledge and skills, and increasing awareness of the systems. تتناول هذه الدراسة دور المنظمات غير الحكومية في تعزيز األمن الغذائي لدى بعض األسر الفقيرة في صعيد مصر، بالتطبيق على برنامج "باب أمل" الذي تنفذه عدد من المنظمات الوطنية واإلقليمية والعالمية غير الحكومية، ومن هنا تستهدف الدراسة الكشف عن دور هذه المنظمات غير الحكومية في تعزيز األمن الغذائي لدى األسر الفقيرة في محافظة سوهاج. وقد اعتمدت الدراسة على منهج المسح االجتماعي عن طريق العينة، التي تم اختيارها بطريقة العينة العشوائية المنتظمة، من خالل كشوف األسر المستفيدة من البرنامج بمحافظة سوهاج، وتم جمع البيانات من خالل أداة االستبار )المقابلة(، عالوة على مقياس تجربة انعدام األمن الغذائي )اإلطار األسري( الذي طورته منظمة األغذية والز ارعة لألمم المتحدة. وقد توصلت الدراسة إلى أنه بالرغم من هشاشة األوضاع االقتصادية واالجتماعية لألسر المستفيدة، فإن برنامج "باب أمل" كان له دور فعال في تعزيز مستويات األمن الغذائي لدى عينة من األسر المستفيدة، من خالل دعم سبل العيش وتعزيز دخل األسر وتنمية معارف ومهارات األسرة وزيادة الوعي بالنظم الغذائية الصحية والسليمة التي تالئم طبيعة وموارد البيئة التي تعيش فيها األسرة.
