Amazon.com Inc. has announced that it will use space lasers to ensure reliable broadband coverage, even in remote areas such as the middle of the ocean. This technology, known as optical inter-satellite links, will allow a satellite to transmit data to a cruise ship or other remote location by passing the request on to another satellite with a clear view of a ground station. Amazon successfully tested this technology with two prototype satellites and plans to eventually operate a constellation of 3,236 satellites.
