This article discusses a study on pet ownership during the COVID-19 pandemic and its relationship to sociodemographic factors. The study analyzed data from a nationally-representative sample of United States families and found that pet ownership varied based on factors such as race, education level, and household income. White and Indigenous individuals had higher odds of pet ownership, while Black, Asian, Hispanic, and individuals with a parent with a graduate degree had lower odds. The study suggests that economic factors and systemic inequities may have influenced families' decisions to acquire or relinquish pets during the pandemic. Further research is recommended to understand the role of pets in families' lives and their impact on psychological well-being. The study was funded by the Human-Animal Bond Research Institute and used data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study. [Extracted from the article]
