Protecting self and others against sexual violence: Strategies of adolescents in residential child and youth care. (English)

Adolescents take responsibility for protecting themselves against sexual violence especially by peers. Within a mixed-methods study young people in residential youth care reported on their self-protective strategies and possible ways of support by pedagogical practice. In a quantitative study 121 adolescents reported mainly social self-protection strategies together with friends. In qualitative interviews strategies appeared using bystanders for securing control on interpretation of the situation, agency and organizing resources and intervening with the aim of protecting self and others. Group discussions showed interventions as a process with possible obstacles for intervening bystanders. Without solutions interventions fail. Adolescents benefited from pedagogical work on protection issues and were able to formulate expectations on professional and organizational measures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Jugendliche übernehmen Verantwortung, wenn es um den Schutz vor sexuellen Übergriffen, insbesondere durch Gleichaltrige, geht. Bei jungen Menschen in stationären Einrichtungen der Jugendhilfe wurde in einem Mixed-Methods-Projekt untersucht, wie sie dies tun und welche Unterstützungsmöglichkeiten sich für die pädagogische Praxis bieten. Quantitativ berichteten 121 Jugendliche überwiegend soziale Selbstschutzstrategien in Absprache mit Freund:innen. In qualitativen Interviews wurden Strategien sichtbar, um unter Rückgriff auf Dritte (Bystander) Deutungs-, Handlungs- und Organisationsmacht zu sichern und sich sowie andere zu schützen. Gruppendiskussionen zeigten, dass Eingreifen als ein Prozess verstehbar ist, in dem Bystander sich mit Hürden konfrontiert sehen. Kann keine geeignete Lösung gefunden werden, scheitern diese Prozesse. Jugendliche profitierten von einer pädagogischen Bearbeitung von Schutzthemen und konnten Erwartungen an professionelles und organisationales Handeln formulieren. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
