Professor Behrens beganhis career at ESU in 2014, Professor Colson in 2012,Professor McCoy in 2006, and Professor Storm in1971. This report concerns the action taken on September15, 2022, by the administration of Emporia State Universityto terminate the appointments of thirty tenuredand tenure-track faculty members under a temporary"COVID-related workforce management policy"adopted by the Kansas Board of Regents (KBOR) inJanuary 2021. Professor Catlett, a member of the Departmentof Mathematics and Economics, accepted his firstappointment at ESU in 1976; Professor Lidzy, ofthe Department of Communication and Theater, in2006; Professor Lovett, of the Department of SocialSciences, Sociology, and Criminology, in 1996; andProfessor Allen, also of the Department of SocialSciences, Sociology, and Criminology, in 2019.Except for Professor Allen, whose appointment wasprobationary for tenure, all these faculty membersheld tenured appointments. Certainly, staunch criticsof the administration, such as Professors McCoy andColson, were among those who received terminationnotices, and supporters of the administration, like thehistory professor whose testimony President Hush citedin his October 10 letter, were spared, circumstancesthat lend credibility to such claims.18 In the absence ofacademic due process, the allegations of affected facultymembers that the administration selected their appointmentsfor termination for reasons that violated theiracademic freedom stand unrebutted.
