The article presents information on Great Britain government's plan for health services. Health secretary Patricia Hewitt is getting up to speed with the health agenda she would do well to consider the role that nurses play within this. In fact, it is hard to see how the government can possibly achieve its reform agenda without a full nursing workforce in place — or how standards of patient care can be maintained if the NHS continues to lose 15,000 nurses a year. Primary care and community nurses understand the problems cause by staff shortages only too well.
