The Effectiveness of the English Language Pathway in the Efficient Investment of Teachers Training Program: A Case Study from a Saudi University.

فاعلية مسار اللغة الإنجليزية في برنامج الاستثمار الأمثل للكوادر التعليمية: دراسة حالة من جامعة سعودي.

This study aims at evaluating a recently implemented teacher professional development program in Saudi Arabia called Efficient Investment of Teachers. The program offers different pathways to qualify in-service teachers to teach one of the newly added subjects to K-12 education, such as Law, Critical thinking, financial literacy, and Digital literacy. This study focuses specifically on the English language pathway which aims at qualifying in-service teachers of subjects such as, Islamic, Arabic, and Social studies to teach English at elementary schools. To this end, an exploratory case study approach was employed. Data was obtained through semi-structured interviews with the eight teachers enrolled in this pathway at a Saudi university in the Southern region and five of their instructors. The study yielded some interesting results such as the discrepancy between the teachers’ claimed competence to teach English and their actual performance. Struggles experienced by teachers and instructors during the program were also reported. Based on their experiences, teachers and instructors suggested some measures to further improve the outcomes of the English language pathway. These results have significant implications for researchers and policymakers in Saudi Arabia. For researchers, further research about various aspects of this program, specifically the English language pathway, is much needed. For policymakers, evidence-based research should inform the decisions related to designing professional development programs to ensure their effectiveness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

1578;هدف الدراسة تقييم أحد برامج التطوير المهني للمعلمين المنفذة مؤخرا في المملكة العربية السعودية؛ وهو برنامج الاستثمار الأمثل للكوادر التعليمية. يتيح البرنامج عدة مساراتٍ لتأهيل المعلمين الحاليين لتدريس المقررات المضافة مؤخرًا لمناهج التعليم العام مثل: مهارات التفكير الناقد والمهارات الرقمية والمهارات المالية والقانون. تركز هذه الدراسة تحديدا على مسار اللغة الإنجليزية الذي يهدفُ لتأهيلِ مُدرّسي مواد اللغة العربية، ومواد العلوم الإسلامية، ومواد العلوم الاجتماعية لتدريس اللغة الإنجليزية في مراحل الصفوف الأولية، ولتحقيق هدف الدراسة، وظف تصميم دراسة الحالة وجمعت البيانات عن طريق مقابلة ثمانية من المعلمين الملتحقين بهذا المسار في إحدى جامعات المملكة العربية السعودية بالمنطقة الجنوبية وخمسة من مُدرّسي مُقرَّرات المسار. وكان من أهم نتائج الدراسة الاختلاف بين ما يدعيه المعلمون من قدرة على تدريس اللغة الإنجليزية وبين أدائهم داخل الصف. كما عرضت نتائجُ الدّراسة أبرز العقبات التي واجهها المعلمون و مدرسو المقرراتِ خلال البرنامج واقترحت بعض الإجراءات لتطوير هذا المسار . اخْتُتِمت الدراسة بذكر أهم ما يترتب على هذه النتائج بالنسبة للباحثين وصُناع القرار في المملكة العربية السعودية. وبالنسبة للباحثين فهناك حاجة للمزيد من الدراسات لتقييم برنامج الاستثمار الأمثل، تحديدًا مسار اللغة الإنجليزية. وبالنسبة لصناع القرار التربوي في المملكة العربية السعودية فعليهم الاستناد إلى نتائج البحوث العلمية عند اتخاذ قرارات بشأن التطوير المهني للمعلمين [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
