The book examines Poland, East Germany, Hungary, Romania, Czechoslovakia, and Mongolia. Mongolia, which was caught in a "double Cold War" with China, was also responsive to Interkit. Through comparison with West Germany, Susanne Weigelin-Schwiedrzik explores the way the German Democratic Republic and the PRC maintained strong academic ties from 1951 onward, sinology having been ruined under the Third Reich.
