The article informs about the determination of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) using accelerated solvent extraction (ASE). ASE is an extraction technique that significantly streamlines sample preparation by using the extraction solvents at elevated temperatures and pressures to increase the kinetics of the extraction process. The United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP), in an effort to combat the release of selected POPs, has adopted regulations to be implemented on a global scale. UNEP is interested in eliminating POPs from the environment because these compounds are considered toxic, carcinogenic and mutagenic, and they degrade slowly in the environment.
