SUGAR RATIONING TO CHILDREN OF UNEMPLOYED PARENTS IN THE FIRST CZECHOSLOVAK REPUBLIC: A Probe into the History of State Social and Health Policy. (English)

Based on a unique set of First Republic archival documents from the State Archive Košice – Spišská Nová Ves, the paper presents the conditions and course of a special state sugar food campaign for children of unemployed and underemployed parents in the first half of the 1930s. The text briefly maps the basic parameters of this special state food measures, the method of transport and distribution of sugar using the example of the socially weak eastern Slovak district of Gelnica. This food aid is also a proof of the active approach of the health and social policy of the first Czechoslovak Republic in the field of nutrition of children coming from the most vulnerable social groups. However, contemporary sources show that the sugar contingent allocated by the state was insufficient for this special sugar rationing campaign. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
