Persons, Animals, and Psychological Unity.

The article explores the idea that non-person animals have a lower moral status than persons due to their relative lack of psychological sophistication, but argues that this justification is untenable when the first two ideas are analyzed more precisely using a hybrid moral theory that combines utilitarian and deontological principles. The author formulates the principles and discusses the concept of psychological unity as a necessary and sufficient condition for personhood.
