The shortage of primary care nurses in the United States calls for an examination of mechanisms to promote intent in a career in community-based primary care. Using a qualitative analysis at a university in Southeastern United States, we surveyed two cohorts of Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing students to assess their intentions to enter the community-based primary care (CBPC) workforce over the course of their program. Despite having robust, positively rated, clinical experiences in CBPC, there was a decreasing proportion of students intended to enter the CBPC workforce from the first semester to the final semester of their program. Three main reasons were identified: 1) financial considerations, 2) limited job opportunities in CBPC, and 3) a perception that other areas will provide a larger range of experiences. Strategies to incentivize students to pursue CBPC may include health care system-based strategies, such as financial incentives; increasing the number CBPC nursing positions; and policy change, such as enhancing the scope of practice among registered nurses in CBPC settings and nursing services reimbursement.
