Background: As more and more women attracted with the features of social media and become the users of social sites intensely on other side the oppression of women is also growing. For every second in India one woman turn out to be a victim for cyber crimes and their privacy, dignity and security are also challenged every moment. Women are harassed by sending inappropriate messages, pornographic videos, spoofing messages, stalking in chat rooms etc. Women are not reporting the crimes exposed by them to the relevant authorities as they are not much aware of the procedure and they are also afraid of social embarrassment which can be caused by exposure of the incidents. Hence this cyber crime becomes a stumbling block for the women who desire to take benefit of these ICT developments and exploit these social sites for their social and economic empowerment. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the cyber crimes in Social Networking Media against women users. It also examines the experience of cyber crimes in social media network against women users. The research intended to learn the awareness level of the women cyber security, legal principles and rights for cyber crime. The hypothesis like women are not aware of legal laws and Act relevant to the Cyber crime was framed. This research is limited to victimization of women in social media networks like Whatsapp, Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, Snapchat etc. Methods: Thus the research is descriptive in nature. Women aged above 18yrs socialize in cyber social media network through internet or mobile internet in Chennai (urban) and Kancheepuram (rural) districts was surveyed. Convenience sampling method was used for sample selection. Out of 38 districts in Tamilnadu state 2 districts have been selected. An urban district Chennai and a rural district Kancheepuram were selected in order to compare the state of cyber crime in this district. Results: Most of the respondent face the challenges like getting fake offers, information theft, trolling, cyber bullying, romance & dating and link baiting while using social networking sites. Generally most of the female users are not aware of the legal protection available for cyber crime incidents in social networking sites. But Chennai based respondents' awareness is slightly higher than Kancheepuram based respondents' awareness percentage. Few women believe that legal protection measures available for protection against cyber crimes are IT Act, IT Act 2000 and Cyber cell. Women are not aware of the mechanism/authority to whom they have to make compliant about cybercrimes faced. Conclusions: Women as an individual should be more cautious while communicating in Social Networking Medias and they should be equipped with necessary tools to prevent cyber crimes and they should strong and bold enough to resort their rights and dignity if they are sullied. To conclude women who are users of Social Networking Media should be trained and equipped with cyber knowledge, preventive measures, do and don't, password protection, privacy setting, security and privacy measures, etc. Only technical knowledge enhancement can prevent women from cyber crimes in India.
