      Gin states in his rebuttal that I repeatedly claim that lamotrigine is comparable in its efficacy to lithium but that " I the reality is that lithium and lamotrigine are unique and very different molecules i ". In my critique I argued a more nuanced "horses for courses" model, favouring lithium as first-choice for those with a bipolar I disorder and lamotrigine as the first-line maintenance therapy for those with a bipolar II disorder. I suggest that, while Gin argues for a dimensional model for "bipolar disorder" on the basis of his opinion, such studies (and most importantly the second one as it included formal psychotic features in the symptom set) argue for a categorical binary model for the bipolar disorders and thus support the existence of separate bipolar I and bipolar II disorders. INTRODUCTION: AN EARLIER DEBATE The 2020 Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists' Committee's guidelines for the mood disorders (see Supplementary Material) turn the world of bipolar disorders upside down from down under in dismissing bipolar II disorder as a condition.
