The article presents information on students, who with the most advanced skills may perform worse under exam pressure than their less skilled peers. The reasoning behind this apparent contradiction rests in an evolving understanding of short-term or working memory. In a recent study with 93 Michigan State under-graduates, researchers found that motivated students with more powerful working memories performed about 10 percent better on a low-pressure practice mathematics exam, but they showed no advantage over a lower-functioning group on a high-stakes math exam. According to the "New York Times," researchers believe that those with less working memory may rely on less taxing problem-solving techniques.
