This article focuses on the cancellation of plans to hold the American Library Association Annual Conference in Orlando, Florida. The complaints about logistical difficulties at the American Library Association (ALA) Annual Conference in Orlando last June hit home, so the ALA Executive Board in October decided to cancel plans to hold the 2010 meeting in Orlando and instead try to move it to New York City. Members complained about hotels far from meeting rooms, expensive and hard-to-find taxis, difficulty in getting airport shuttles, the absence of public transportation, and general operational snafus. Negotiations with New York convention officials were expected to have been concluded by Thanksgiving. If New York falls through, both Philadelphia and Dallas have offered incentives to compensate ALA for the penalty for canceling in Orlando. By deciding to hold the 2016 conference in Orlando-by which time new hotels and better cab service should have arrived-ALA should avoid all or most of the penalty.
