This article presents an analysis of the problem in which a university president is proposing corporate sponsorship of the institution's library to offset budget cuts. Michelle Malanga, the director of Library Services of the American University in Dubai, offers her insight. Both sides have an unrealistic view of corporate sponsorship. Janson needs to understand there is a difference in who pays for services, while Broomell needs to relax his stance and see how he can use sponsorships to maintain current services, while possibly adding value to programs. Corporate sponsorship in libraries is not uncommon. The key to successful sponsorships is to have clear, written statements so that the library and the donor understand exactly what will be expected of each. The Canadian Library Association established a set of statements for sponsorship agreements, including the agreement that sponsors further the library's mission, goals, objectives and priorities, but do not drive the library's agenda or priorities. With realistic expectations, Broomell and Janson have an opportunity to create an additional form of funding, one that can benefit both the library and the corporation.
