Zanzibar is a semi-autonomous territory in political union with Tanzania. The Zanzibar archipelago consists of two larger islands, Zanzibar (also known locally by its Swahili name of Unguja) and Pemba, and a collection of smaller islands all located in the Indian Ocean. Zanzibar, the larger of the two main islands, is located approximately 25 miles (40 kilometers) from the Tanzanian mainland. It had an estimated population in 2018 of 1.3 million people who lived across an area stretching across 950 square miles (2,460 square kilometers). About two-thirds of the islands’ population live on the larger island of Zanzibar.House of Wonders in Stone Town, Zanzibar City, c. 1907.Frankfurt University Library [Public domain] Topographic map of the Zanzibar Archipelago of the Western Indian Ocean, off the east coast of Africa in Tanzania.Oona Räisänen (Mysid) [CC BY-SA 4.0 (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0)]
