In November 2003, the Office of the Commissioner of Official Languages held a meeting to prepare for a national symposium. On the agenda of the symposium, to be held in March 2004, is a discussion of how to meet the goal of doubling the number of young Canadians who have a functional knowledge of a second official language. Intensive French, designed for non-French-speaking Canadian students at the elementary level, is one way to enhance functional proficiency in French. It serves to "kick-start" students' learning by providing intensive exposure at an early stage. This enhances their motivation to learn French because it provides an initial success experience.
