The city of Surat in south Gujarat, India, is highly affected by seawater intrusion. This study assessed the quality of groundwater degraded by seawater intrusion in the coastal regions of Surat. Data for four wells in the coastal villages were collected and analyzed. Water quality was assessed in terms of the groundwater quality index (GWQI) by determining electrical conductivity, total dissolved solids, chloride, and hardness in the pre-monsoon season (May-June) for the years 2001 to 2012. The authors propose an artificial recharging system to improve groundwater quality in the area. For groundwater recharging, a percolation pond is proposed as another option to prevent seawater intrusion and improve groundwater quality. Possible recharge from percolation ponds to wells was determined using Darcy's law and flows through porous media. Percentage reduction in groundwater quality parameters after recharging was calculated, and estimated improvement GWQI following recharging was computed for the years 2012 to 2022.
