An investigation on the use of didactic manipulative materials and problem solving in teaching and learning mathematics of the fourth year of Elementary School.

This work is part of a study aimed at investigating the use of didactic manipulative materials (DMM) and problem solving for students in the early years of the elementary school. In this article, it is presented activities that were applied to students in the fourth grade of elementary school, focusing on the teaching of plane geometry (perimeter and area of polygons), through the use of a DMM called TQG. The research follows a qualitative approach, the case study. The use of TQG provides the development of different activities in which the students could solve activities of different ways. In addition, it was revealed that this application favored the learning of the student in relation to focused concepts. So, it highlights the importance of employment MDM combined with problem-solving approach in this level of education. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Este trabalho é parte de uma pesquisa que teve por objetivo investigar a utilização de materiais didáticos manipuláveis (MDM) e resolução de problemas para alunos dos anos iniciais do Ensino Fundamental. Neste trabalho, abordaremos atividades que foram aplicadas a alunos do quarto ano do Ensino Fundamental, com enfoque para o ensino de geometria plana (perímetro e área de polígonos), por meio do uso de um MDM denominado Tábua Quadriculada Geoplanar (TQG). A pesquisa segue uma abordagem qualitativa, estudo de caso. A utilização da TQG proporcionou o desenvolvimento de atividades diferenciadas nas quais os alunos puderam resolver atividades de diferentes maneiras. Além disso, foi possível perceber que esta aplicação favoreceu a aprendizagem dos alunos em relação aos conceitos focados; isso ressalta a importância do emprego de MDM aliado à metodologia de resolução de problemas neste nível de ensino.
