In the summer of 2014, the Gamergate controversy was launched with attacks on game developer Zoe Quinn. Eron Gjoni, a former boyfriend of Quinn, used 4chan—a website notorious for its anonymous, "anything-goes" forums—and Internet relay chat (IRC) websites to claim that Quinn had had sex with Nathan Grayson, a reviewer for the gaming website and blog Kotaku, in exchange for a good review of her free 2013 game Depression Quest. Kotaku responded with assurances that the reviewer in question had never even reviewed the game. Nevertheless, a Twitter campaign led by online groups such as 4chan and Anonymous continued to attack Quinn as well as other women working for Vox Media, Kotaku’s parent company, and anyone else whom the attackers felt threatened gaming culture. Fearing for her life, Quinn was forced into hiding, and mainstream media picked up her story.
