This section presents news briefs related to libraries and publishing in the U.S., as of February 1989. After four years of separation, Kraus Thomson Organization Limited of White Plains, New York, has reacquired Kraus Reprint and Periodicals of Millwood, New York. The Millwood group will be united with Kraus International Publications and Kraus Microform with Barry Katzen as director. On the other hand, the Committee on Education Funding (CEF) challenged U.S. President George Bush, who has said that he intended to become the education president, to commit $2.5 million in funds for federal education programs as a down payment on a four-year strategy. The committee is a coalition of 100 organizations representing students, teachers, parents, librarians, administrators, trustees, and school board members. CEF President Gerald Morris noted that in fiscal year 1979 education represented 2.5 percent of the federal budget. By fiscal year 1988 it was only 1.7 percent. Meanwhile, the Council on Library Resources has awarded a $60,000 grant to the School of Library and Information Science at the University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to conduct an institute on the management of archival information. The institute's focus will be on creating and maintaining modern records in electronic formats.
