Towards Legitimate Nursing Work? Historical Discursive Constructions of Abortion in The Canadian Nurse, 1950-1965.

To the detriment of women's health, the abortion work of nurses in Canada has gone largely unexamined and is not well understood. This historical discourse analysis examines discursive constructions of nurses' abortion work and ongoing renegotiations of professional identity in The Canadian Nurse from 1950 to 1965. By investigating what has shaped and continues to inform nurses' understandings and enactment of abortion work over time, I hope to contribute to a foundation from which to evaluate contemporary abortion services and to foster conditions that support nurses in providing safe abortion care. Le rôle des infirmières dans les avortements au Canada reste méconnu et mal compris, au détriment même de la santé des femmes. L'analyse historique que nous proposons ici se penche sur la relation entre les discours infirmiers construits autour de l'avortement et la mise en oeuvre d'une identité professionnelle en constante renégociation telle qu'elle apparaît dans le journal The Canadian Nurse, de 1950 à 1965. En scrutant les éléments qui ont façonné ces discours et informé ces professionnelles sur la façon de procéder à des avortements, il s'agit de contribuer à poser des jalons pour mieux évaluer les services actuellement offerts en matière d'avortement et d'aider à rassembler les conditions nécessaires pour supporter les infirmières dans leur offre de soins abortifs sécuritaires.
