      Disclosed herein are compositions and methods useful for the diagnosis, assessment, and characterization of endometriosis in a subject in need thereof, based upon the expression level of at least one miRNA that is associated with endometriosis.

      1. A method of treating endometriosis in a subject, the method comprising: (I) determining that the subject has endometriosis by: (a) providing a blood, serum, or plasma sample comprising nucleic acids from the subject; (b) obtaining a detected level of at least one miRNA, wherein the level of the at least one miRNA is determined by performing an amplification reaction on at least one miRNA selected from the group consisting of: miR-125b, miR143, miR-145, miR-150, miR-342, miR-451, miR-3613, miR-500, miR-18, miR-214, miR-126, miR-553, miR-4668, and miR-6755; (c) detecting endometriosis in the subject based on the level of the at least one miRNA; and (II) administering a treatment for the endometriosis to the subject, thereby treating the endometriosis.

      2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the blood, serum, or plasma sample is a serum sample.
    • Claim:
      3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one miRNA is a circulating, cell-free miRNA.
    • Claim:
      4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the treatment is selected from the group consisting of: a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, a hormone therapy, a hormonal contraceptive, surgical laparoscopy, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy.
    • Claim:
      5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the treatment is surgical laparotomy.
    • Claim:
      6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the treatment is selected from the group consisting of: a gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist, a progestin, an oral contraceptive, an aromatase inhibitor, and a statin.
    • Claim:
      7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one miRNA comprises at least two miRNAs selected from the group consisting of: miR-125b, miR-150, miR-342, miR-451a, miR-3613, and let-7b.
    • Claim:
      8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one miRNA comprises at least four miRNAs selected from the group consisting of: miR-125b, miR-150, miR-342, miR-451a, miR-3613, and let-7b.
    • Claim:
      9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one miRNA comprises miR-342.
    • Claim:
      10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one miRNA comprises miR-451a.
    • Claim:
      11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one miRNA comprises miR-125b.
    • Claim:
      12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one miRNA comprises miR-150.
    • Claim:
      13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one miRNA comprises miR-3613.
    • Claim:
      14. The method of claim 1 , wherein the endometriosis is detected with a sensitivity of at least 80%.
    • Claim:
      15. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one miRNA is selected from the group consisting of: miR-125b, miR-150, miR-342, and miR-451a, and is at least 20% up-regulated in the blood, plasma, or serum sample compared with a control.
    • Claim:
      16. The method of claim 1 , wherein the level of miR-3613 is at least 20% down-regulated in the blood, plasma or serum sample compared with a control.
