نبذة مختصرة : International audience ; To be approved, a package dedicated to the transport of radioactive material must withstand several tests required by the IAEA Regulations for the Safe Transport of Radioactive Material (No. SSR-6 Rev. 1, 2018 Edition), one of which is a thermal test mainly consisting of a 30-minute fully engulfing 800 °C fire. To demonstrate the safety level of the package, the thermal test requirements may be met by an actual test, by numerical evaluation, or by a combination of both. This combination may be necessary if, for example, the initial conditions required for an actual test were not achieved or if all the package design features were not fully represented in the experiment. Within that framework, since 2022, IRSN (now ASNR) performed sensitivity calculations on numerical models of approved transport packages to study the influence of several parameters (paint properties, endothermal materials properties, package position, etc.), with the objective to cover several types of thermal behaviours (high and low inertia, high and low residual power, etc.). The temperatures in the components of the package models during the fire and cooling phases were analysed and put into perspective with safety issues.
